This map of the world is divided into the regions used by Little League Baseball, the youth organisation that runs the Little League World Series. The regions group countries and US states into areas for qualifying tournaments.
The map dates from 2007, when the World Series used 16 regions, eight in the United States and eight international. Regional boundaries have been adjusted since, so it should be read as a historic snapshot.
Regions of the world
US regions follow broad geography, with names such as New England, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Great Lakes, Midwest, Southwest, West and Northwest. International regions included Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Mexico, Japan, the Asia-Pacific and Europe.
Teams win their local leagues, then district, state and regional tournaments, and the regional champions travel to South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the World Series.
A long history
Little League was founded in Williamsport in 1939 by Carl Stotz, and the first World Series was held in 1947. It has since become one of the best-known youth sports events in the world, with international participation since the 1950s.
Beyond the World Series
Little League is a worldwide programme for children, and the World Series is its showpiece for players aged 12 or under. Girls have been able to take part since 1974, after a legal challenge in the early 1970s. The regional system shown on the map is designed so that winners of local leagues advance through district, state and regional tournaments, giving every league a route to South Williamsport in principle.
